If you wear scleral contact lenses, you probably have an unusual eye condition such as keratoconus where traditional treatment fails. When you go in for your annual contact lens examination, should you wear your scleral lenses into the exam? Yes! Read on to learn why.

Absolutely Wear Your Scleral Lenses into Examination

Unless your eye clinic specifically instructed you otherwise, you should wear your scleral lenses to the appointment! If you are unable to wear your scleral lenses due to a problem like a lens chip or crack, just bring the lenses with you in hand.

Wear Scleral Lenses for Safety, Saving Time, and Improved Diagnosis

Since most scleral lens wearers require them for optimal vision, you likely need them to safely drive to the office and to read and complete any new paperwork. Wearing your scleral lenses also helps your scleral lens prescriber better diagnose and treat you. If you come in wearing them, your eye doctor has the opportunity to finalize your new scleral lens prescription that same visit, saving you from a return visit for contact lens evaluation with additional out-of-pocket expenses. If you do not wear your scleral lenses into examination, abnormally blurry vision can confound whether you have a side vision deficit or color vision deficiency making it harder for your eye doctor to detect certain eye diseases. Finally, in instances where the examination data is used for fulfilling vision requirements for DMV license renewal or occupational vision requirements, wearing your scleral lenses provides you the best shot of passing.

The One Instance Not to Wear Scleral Lenses into Examination

The one instance you should not wear your scleral lenses into examination is if you have discontinued wearing them and have no desire to have a valid scleral lens prescription for the year. If you have discontinued scleral lens wear and do not wish to undergo contact lens evaluation and prescribing, let the scheduling staff know. That way, your eye clinic can schedule you for the appropriate service while helping other patients needing to get it.
